PERMANENT MATIBABU FOUNDATION CLINIC

Our most ambitious project has been to establish the permanent Matibabu Foundation Clinic. The Clinic provides a full array of medical services, but most prominently the Clinic is a state-of-the-art AIDS treatment and counseling center. (Approximately 40% of the Ugenya population has AIDS or is HIV-positive).

Our primary clinic facility, located in Ukwala, is a government-approved voluntary counseling and testing center, staffed with government-certified HIV counselors trained to test and counsel patients. The clinic’s indigenous staff also includes a full-time doctor trained in HIV treatment, a clinical officer, a nurse, a pharmacist, and a lab technician. The clinic provides AIDS testing and counseling; our lab performs standard tests and procedures, and with our recently acquired CD4 machine, flow cytometry to determine when antiretroviral drugs are needed. Our doctor can prescribe medications to prevent opportunistic infections and in collaboration with the government clinic nearby, treatment for HIV.

Apart from HIV/AIDS, our Clinic provides a broad range of other medical services. For instance, we offer quick malaria testing and, for those who test positive, free coartem (the most effective medication), supplied by the Government of Kenya.

In addition to our main clinic facility in Ukwala, we have opened a smaller clinic in Nzoia. Our goal is to grow through satellite facilities that will eventually serve the majority of the population of Ugenya. Ultimately we hope to serve as a model for rural AIDS treatment.

We are currently raising money to outfit our Clinic with equipment to expand our laboratory to be full service with ability to do blood counts, chemistry analysis and smears to look for tuberculosis. We encourage financial and in-kind donations from pharmaceutical companies and medical equipment suppliers and manufacturers.
